It’s been a couple of weeks since the release of Apex Legends and players are starting to get to grips on the uses of different weapons in the game. This article will give you an in-depth look at all of the Apex Legends guns making it easier to see what weapons suit your playstyle. If you have just started playing, check out my Apex Legends Tips to get you up to speed.

Ratings for each gun will be displayed below, these are my personal opinion and the opinion of other Apex fans. Further information on each of the weapons can be found in the article.

5 – Mastiff, Peacekeeper, Kraber
4 – Scout, Spitfire, R301, Wingman
3 – Flatline, Devotion, Longbow, Havoc, Prowler
2 – Hemlok, R99, EVA-8, RE45 Auto
1 – Mozambique, P2020, Alternator, Triple Take

Assault Rifles

Hemlok

The Hemlok is a three-round burst fire assault rifle. Very effective at mid-long range however may cause you problems when up close.

Hemlok Burst AR
  • Ammo Type – Heavy (Green)
  • Default Magazine Size – 18
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.40 Seconds/2.85 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 6 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Barrel and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 18
  • Damage (Headshot) – 24

Rating – 2/5
The reason for the low rating is mainly down to the burst fire. While it is effective at long range, I find being able to choose whether I want to tap shots or spray enables me to win a lot more team-fights.

Flatline

The Flatline is a fully automatic assault rifle capable of picking off enemies from range or even up close.

VK-47 Flatline
  • Ammo Type – Heavy (Green)
  • Default Magazine Size – 20
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.40 Seconds/3.10 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 10 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 16
  • Damage (Head) – 32

Rating – 3/5
This weapon gets a higher rating than the Hemlok mainly due to the fact it can be used as fully automatic. Not only this but it has a higher fire rate and damage allowing it to be more useful at close range. However it’s important to note that you are not able to use a barrel stabilizer meaning it is less accurate.

R-301 Carbine

The R-301 is a fully automatic assault rifle. This is the only assault rifle that uses light ammo.

R-301 Carbine
  • Ammo Type – Light (Orange)
  • Default Magazine Size – 18
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.40 Seconds/3.20 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 13.5 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Barrel and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 14
  • Damage (Head) – 28

Rating – 4/5
This easily takes the spot for my favourite assault rifle. Fully automatic, fast fire rate, accurate and high damage. While the effectiveness may fall off long range adapting your play style in order to get closer to the enemy can help solve this.

Havoc

This weapon is different from others as it has a charge-up time before it shoots. This is made up for by a high fire rate and damage.

Havoc Rifle
  • Ammo Type – Energy (Yellow)
  • Default Magazine Size – 25
  • Reload Time – 3.20 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 11.2 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Scope, Stock and Hop-up
  • Damage (Body) – 18
  • Damage (Head) – 36

Rating – 3/5
Personally I’m not the biggest fan of energy weapons, I find the charge-up time to be an inconvenience that can sometimes get me killed. However it gets this rating due to its high damage especially on head-shots.

Sub Machine Guns

Alternator

First up is the Alternator, a fully automatic SMG with one of the quickest reload times in the game.

Alternator SMG
  • Ammo Type – Light (Orange)
  • Default Magazine Size – 16
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 1.9 Seconds/2.23 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 10 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Barrel and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 12
  • Damage (Head) – 18

Rating – 1/5
Aside from its reload time this gun doesn’t have too much going for it. Low damage and low fire rate meaning you will be outclassed by just about any gun in the game.

Prowler

The Prowler is a burst fire SMG with a very similar look to the P90 that we all know and love. Additionally this is the only SMG that use’s heavy ammo.

Prowler Burst PDW
  • Ammo Type – Heavy (Green)
  • Default Magazine Size – 20
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.0 Seconds/2.6 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 11 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Hop-up and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 14
  • Damage (Head) – 21

Rating – 3/5
Initially I scored this weapon quite low, however with the use of a hop-up the Prowler can turn into an absolute beast with the highest damage output of all the SMG’s.

R-99

The R-99 is a extremely high fire rate SMG, with the look of an MP5 everyone should be familiar with this weapon.

R-99 SMG
  • Ammo Type – Light (Orange)
  • Default Magazine Size – 18
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 1.80 Seconds/2.45 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 18 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Barrel and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 12
  • Damage (Head) – 18

Rating – 2/5
Looking at the fire rate and reload time it may seem strange as to why I’ve rated this weapon so low, however with low damage and a small magazine size this weapon isn’t all its cracked up to be. Still, its a decent weapon if you plan on picking up a R301 later in the game.

Light Machine Guns

Spitfire

The Spitfire is a fully automatic light machine gun. Great at spraying down enemies at close-mid range.

M600 Spitfire
  • Ammo Type – Heavy (Green)
  • Default Magazine Size – 35
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.80 Seconds/3.33 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 9 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Barrel and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 20
  • Damage (Head) – 40

Rating – 4/5
This weapon is an absolute beast. The high magazine size combined with high damage makes this one of the best weapons in mid-range combat. Hitting head-shots with this weapon will down an enemy in no time.

Devotion

The Devotion is an energy light machine gun. Just like other energy weapons it charges as you fire, slowly increasing in fire rate.

Devotion LMG
  • Ammo Type – Energy (Yellow)
  • Default Magazine Size – 44
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.80 Seconds/3.63 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 15 Shots per second (Full charge)
  • Attachments – Scope, Barrel, Stock and Hop-up
  • Damage (Body) – 17
  • Damage (Head) – 34

Rating – 3/5

While it beats the Spitfire in magazine size, the Devotion is lacking in damage for a gun of its size. The charge-up time means that the initial DPS is really low and once the weapon gets going the recoil is really difficult to control.

Sniper Rifles

Triple Take

The Triple Take is an energy powered sniper rifle that fires 3 shots in a cone-shaped burst.

Triple Take
  • Ammo Type – Energy (Yellow)
  • Default Magazine Size – 5
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.60 Seconds/3.40 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 1.25 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Scope, Stock and Hop-up
  • Damage (Body) – 23 (69 Total)
  • Damage (Head) – 46 (138 Total)

Rating 1/5
Triple Take takes the spot for the worst sniper rifle on Apex. From the annoying charge up time to the low damage you’d be better off picking up any other sniper rifle that you find. However with the hop-up you may see some improvements.

Longbow

The Longbow is a bolt action sniper rifle and the only weapon in the game that can equip 5 attachments.

Longbow DMR
  • Ammo Type – Heavy (Green)
  • Default Magazine Size – 5
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.66 Seconds/3.66 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 1.2 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Barrel, Stock and Hop-up
  • Damage (Body) – 55
  • Damage (Head) – 110 (138 with Hop-up)

Rating – 3/5
Unfortunately unlike other bolt actions the Longbow has quite mediocre damage and for that reason it gets a mediocre rating.

Scout

The Scout is a semi-automatic sniper rifle.

G7 Scout
  • Ammo Type – Light (Orange)
  • Default Magazine Size – 10
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.40 Seconds/3.00 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 4.5 Shots per second
  • Attachments -Extended Mag, Scope, Barrel and Stock
  • Damage (Body) – 30
  • Damage (Head) – 60

Rating – 4/5
Due to its fast fire rate and decent damage this sniper is a great contender for those long range battles. Not only this but has the quickest reload time of all the sniper rifles making it easier to get back into the action.

Kraber

The Kraber is a .50-CAL sniper rifle. This weapon is one of the two legendary weapons in the game, they can only be found in supply drops across the map.

Kraber .50-CAL Sniper
  • Ammo Type – Unique
  • Default Magazine Size – 4
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 3.20 Seconds/4.30 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 0.47 Shots per second
  • Attachments – None
  • Damage (Body) – 125
  • Damage (Head) – 250

Rating – 6/5
Kraber takes the spot for the single highest damage projectile in the game. This is the only weapon in the game capable of one-shotting someone with max armor. No wonder its at the top of the list!

Shotguns

Mozambique

The Mozambique is a shotgun/pistol hybrid.

Mozambique Shotgun
  • Ammo Type – Shotgun Shells (Red)
  • Default Magazine Size – 3
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.10 Seconds/2.60 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 2.2 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope
  • Damage (Body) – 45
  • Damage (Head) – 66

Rating – 1/5
Hand’s down, the worst weapon in Apex Legends. So much so you would probably be better off frantically meleeing the enemy.

EVA-8 Auto

The EVA-8 is a semi-automatic shotgun allowing you to pump a total of 8 shots into the enemy before needing to reload.

EVA-8 Auto
  • Ammo Type – Shotgun Shells (Red)
  • Default Magazine Size – 8
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.75 Seconds/3.00 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 2 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Barrel
  • Damage (Body) – 7 (63 Total)
  • Damage (Head) – 10 (90 Total)

Rating 2/5
Looking at its damage its no wonder this weapon gets rated so low, however it’s still of use in the early stages of the game in close-quarters combat.

Peacekeeper

The Peacekeeper is a pump-action shotgun with a total of 6 shots it’s capable of doing copious amounts of damage.

Peacekeeper
  • Ammo Type – Shotgun Shells (Red)
  • Default Magazine Size – 6
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 2.50 Seconds/3.50 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 0.97 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope and Hop-up
  • Damage (Body) – 10 (110 Total)
  • Damage (Head) – 15 (165 Total)

Rating – 5/5
Wasn’t too difficult for me to rate this one. If you have played Apex Legends then you have probably run into this weapon many times. Besides the Mastiff nothing can beat the Peacekeeper at close range.

Mastiff

The Mastiff Shotgun shoots 8 bullets in a horizontal burst.

Mastiff Shotgun
  • Ammo Type – Unique
  • Default Magazine Size – 4
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 1.03 Seconds/1.70 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 1.3 Shots per second
  • Attachments – None
  • Damage (Body) – 18 (144 Total)
  • Damage (Head) – 36 (288 Total)

Rating – 6/5
Possibly the only thing that can beat a Peacekeeper at close range. This shotgun deals insane damage, just make sure you get close!

Pistols

P2020

Probably only a few shades better than the Mozambique, the P2020 is the worst pistol that you can get your hands on in Apex Legends.

P2020
  • Ammo Type – Light (Orange)
  • Default Magazine Size – 10
  • Reload Time – 1.25 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 8.5 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope
  • Damage (Body) – 12
  • Damage (Head) – 18

Rating – 1/5
Its not really surprising that this comes in at the bottom of the pack. However despite its misfortunes you never know when it might come in handy!

RE 45 Auto

The RE-45 is a fully automatic pistol with only 15 rounds in the clip, so make sure your shots count!

RE-45 Auto
  • Ammo Type – Light (Orange)
  • Default Magazine Size – 15
  • Tactical/Reload Time – 1.74 Seconds/2.12 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 13 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope and Barrel
  • Damage (Body) – 11
  • Damage (Head) – 16

Rating – 2/5
Although it has lower damage than the P2020 due to its fully automatic capabilities and high fire rate this pistol allows you to get a lot more damage out.

Wingman

The Wingman is a high powered revolver that uses heavy ammo. Not quite the Desert Eagle you were hoping for, but it’ll do!

Wingman
  • Ammo Type – Heavy (Green)
  • Default Magazine Size – 6
  • Reload Time – 2.1 Seconds
  • Fire Rate – 3.4 Shots per second
  • Attachments – Extended Mag, Scope, Hop-up
  • Damage (Body) – 45
  • Damage (Head) – 90

Rating – 4/5
Easily one of the most satisfying weapons to use at the moment, this pistol is extremely accurate and packs a strong punch. Perfect for pinging off enemies at range.
